How can I know how many bytes I am offset from the start of an InputStream without keeping track of the number of bytes read?

Hi everyone, I'd like to ask you if you can tell me how can i know how many bytes i am offset from the start of an inputstream without keeping track of the number of bytes read? Please kindly inform me :)
